About this object
Les Darcy was an Australian boxer, whose career spanned from 1910 to 1917. He was born near Maitland in 1895, and his amazing career record and boxing prowess earned him the nickname ‘The Maitland Wonder’. MRAG has a vast Les Darcy collection, celebrating and preserving the memory of the young boxing legend.

Signed on the left hand side of the photo is text that reads "To my friend John Russell / with sincere regards / Dave Smith 21.2.22". Dave Smith was a boxer who was born in New Zealand and was the Australian heavyweight champion. He trained Les Darcy and refined him into the boxing champion that he became. Darcy eventually surpassed Smith, defeating him twice.
