About this object
Les Darcy was an Australian boxer, whose career spanned from 1910 to 1917. MRAG has a vast Les Darcy collection, celebrating and preserving the memory of the young boxing legend.
This picture was owned by Father Sharkey, but was originally given to Father Joe Coady, one of Darcy's closest friends and confidants. Father Coady, a fan and occassional particpant of boxing himself, encouraged Darcy's boxing talents. Darcy was a devout Catholic, attending Father Coady's 6am sermons in order to make it in time for his blacksmith apprenticeship. When he had a boxing matches in Sydney on Saturday nights, Darcy would often take the overnight train back to Maitland so that he may attend mass on Sunday morning.
