About this object
This drawing is the study for Jenny Sages’ 2007 Archibald Finalist painting, Irina Baronova (handing on the baton), 2007. This portrait was created after Sages had watched Baranova working with young ballerinas in Melbourne.
Irina Baronova was a legendary Russian ballerina who became famous in the 1930s as one of the ‘baby ballerinas’ of the Les Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo. Baronova and Tamara Toumanova were only 14, and Tatiana Riabouchinska only 16, when they were given leading roles and star billing in the ballet company.

This work was donated through the Australian Government’s Cultural Gifts Program by Pauline Hunter in 2013
