About this object
Born in 1951, the Brisbane-based artist Jenny Watson has been painting for over forty years. Inspired by punk and feminist movements, Watson's conceptual approach to making destabilises material boundaries through incorporating language, collage, and textiles in her work. In accordance with Watson’s predilection for autobiographical work, this self-portrait, 'Australian artist of the 80s,' is an allegorical depiction of the artist’s personal history as well as collective milieu - the black clad figure denoting Watson’s punk public persona, and the reclined posture of the figure referencing the melancholic 80s Australian 80s art landscape.
This print is from a portfolio of prints, 'The Bicentennial Folio of Prints by Twenty Five Australian Artists' which was commissioned by the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, and issued in 1988 to mark the Bicentenerary.
