About this object
Sydney-born Kerrie Lester was known for her bold and sensitive approach to portraiture, incorporating sculptural and textile elements in a disarming manner. She was awarded the Archibald Packing Prize in 1998 for her 'Self-portrait as Bridesmaid,’ referencing her fatigued disposition towards the Prize. Art historian Gavin Fry reflected that Lester’s work ‘embodies both the serious and the whimsical, the fleeting and the solid, the wry smile with instant recognition of our own weaknesses and excesses.
This work featured in the MRAG exhibition 'Kerrie Lester, Facetime', 27 Feb – 26 April 2015 and was purchased by Maitland Regional Art Gallery in 2016. It features elements that were common in Lesters 2D works: whimsical subject matter, collaged found objects, the use of stitching and her signature signed as a mirror image of 'Lester'.
