About this object
John Martin (1942-2017) lived in Allandale, close to Maitland. He also spent time in Berlin and his works were influenced by the landscapes of both regions.
He served as Maitland's Mayor from 1994-1996.

In Joanna Mendelssohn's essay, The Rhythm of the Shadows: The Art of John Martin (p.14), Mendelssohn writes, "The Gemaldegalerie in Berlin owns the elegant The Penance of St Jerome, but for Martin his ultimate painting was the Flagellation of Christ, to be found in Urbino. This work, whose transcending geometry is used to describe an act of violence, helped transform Martin's sensibility. He began to paint a series, Piero's Lesson: Tintoretto's Dream on an imagined connection between the two Renaissance masters. Piero, the lord of design, appears in a dream to Tintoretto, the great colourist and master of he painterly. He advises Tinteretto not to lose sight of geometry in his art. This series shows the artist in transition again, as he works with spiky angles and deep, rich colours."
