About this object
'All souls of the revolution' is an ever evolving series by artist Luke Roberts comprising dolls, clowns, scalliwags, bears, birds, rabbits and more, made of knitted wool, fabric or synthetic materials. Sourced from opshops and second hand stalls, these items collected by Roberts form a frieze-like 'Wunderkammer/Kunstkamera' of toys when installed from floor to ceiling, filling the wall with what the artist has called "wingless angels" referring to the cherubs or cupids that can be seen in Baroque and Rococo ceiling decorations. These soft toys, outgrown, lost or forgotten, also remind us of gifts of love between adults and children, become markers of the loss of innocence of childhood, and are also reminiscent of roadside memorials. (The title 'All souls of the revolution' derives from the Catholic celebration 'All Souls Day', a holy day set aside for honoring the dead.)
