J. G. White Joinery (estab. 1845, closed 1968): Manufacturer
About this object
Established in 1845, by Joseph George White (1823-1912), the J. G. White Joinery family business created high-quality furniture for the region from their premise on Robert Street in Morpeth. Joseph's son Samuel took over the business from his father and then grandson Joe assumed control in 1926. The J.G. White Joinery factory closed in the 1968, with the building being repurposed as a second-hand and antique store. In 1865, White installed a unique internal well used to drive the timber processing machines via a steam engine. The factory was renowned for the ever-growing collection of modern, labour-saving machinery. White imported, designed and manufactured many purpose-built tools that were innovative and efficient. Many of the furniture pieces were passed down through four generations to Paulene White, descendant of J. G. White, who donated the pieces to the museum. The collection consists of dining tables, upholstered armchairs, stools, bookcases and decor.
