About this object
Designed for Maitland City Council by Bunning and Madden architects, the collection consists of 6 separate 1-page hand-coloured and numbered drawings of different aspects of the plans for the Rutherford pedestrian mall, shops, library and community centre. In the 1950s and early 1960s, Rutherford became home to a growing number of light industries. At the core was the Burlington Mills. This saw expansion in the locality, and the need to create services and facilities. The design and building of the pedestrian mall and shops at Rutherford sits within this context.

Significance
The drawings for the Rutherford pedestrian mall and shops are significant for their association with the high-profile modernist Australian architectural firm of Bunning and Madden, and as documentation of the retail development in early 1960s Rutherford that was indicative of the growth of population and opportunities in the suburb. Along with other architectural plans and drawings in the Maitland City Library collection they are representative of, over time, Maitland City Council commissioning the design of different buildings and complexes and they offer interpretive value in this context. They are in reasonable condition.
