About this object
Johnston’s Shoes was established in Maitland in 1885 by Alfred Johnston and has continued to operate as a family business. It is still, in 2022, owned and managed by the family.
Progress Johnston’s Jubilee documents and celebrates the 50th anniversary of the business. Significantly, it also overtly states that the store’s jubilee coincides with the centenary of the proclamation of East and West Maitland and the celebrations planned to mark that event. In this context, the book locates the history and success of the family business in the broader context of events in Maitland – and beyond. The underlying message is about the prosperity and achievements of the locality and the business. It offers a year-by-year summary of what the authors regarded as the significant events. These include the opening of businesses and public buildings, sporting events and organisations, royal visits, floods, railways, and the deaths of prominent figures.

Significance
Progress Johnston’s Jubilee is significant for its association with, and documentation of, the retail family business of Johnston’s Shoes that has operated in Maitland since 1885. It also provides insights into events, businesses, institutions and people regarded as significant from the perspective of someone writing in 1935, and from the perspective of highlighting the achievements of the locality on the occasion of the centenary of the declaration of East and West Maitland as separate entities. It is complemented by the booklet The Glory of the Hunter which was produced at the same time, written by one of the authors of Progress, and also marks the centenary of the creation of West Maitland. It is in fair condition and is complete.
