About this object
Maitland Repertory Theatre (formerly Maitland Repertory Society) was established in 1947 as an amateur local theatre group and has regularly presented plays ever since its establishment. Since the Second World War Maitland Repertory Theatre has played a central role in this aspect of the district’s cultural life. Initially the group staged the plays in a variety of venues including the Town Hall and the Methodist Hall. In 1963 the Congregational Church was purchased and converted to a theatre. Productions since 1965 have been in what became known as the Repertory Playhouse (and later, Theatre) with a break between 1980 and 1982 when extra facilities were added to the building and fire equipment was installed.
The collection holds an incomplete set of programmes of Maitland Repertory’s productions since 1947; copies of handwritten and typed newsletters from the 1970s and 1980s; a typed manuscript with a timeline for The Repertory; and a number of newspaper clippings.
