About this object
Norma Allen was one of the founding members of the Low Show Group, a collective of women artists who exhibited in Newcastle in the 1960s. Norma, Mary Beeston, Betty Cutcher, Elizabeth Martin, Lillian Sutherland and Rae Richards were students of John Passmore at the Newcastle campus of the National Art School in the 1950s. Norma’s paintings were inspired by the abstracted style of Cézanne as championed
by Passmore.

This self-portrait painting was a finalist in the 1960 Archibald Prize, and was exhibited in the 1995 retrospective exhibition of her work at the Maitland City Art Gallery when it was located at Brough House.
